oldchapters helps you catalog books by photographing their title pages. This page explains what personal data that involves, why, who else handles it, and what you can ask of us.
Who is responsible
oldchapters is run by INIT Labs d.o.o., located at Bukovceva 15, 21000 Split, Croatia (VAT: HR95602550911).
INIT Labs d.o.o. is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. For anything about your data, write to info@oldchapters.com.
What we collect
- –Your account: name, surname, email address, a securely hashed password (we never see the password itself), your library's name, and whether you've confirmed your email. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and a Google account identifier — nothing else from your Google account.
- –Your catalog: the books you add — title, author, publisher, year and the other details you enter — and who in your library added them, and when.
- –Scans: when you photograph a title page, the photo is sent to our AI provider to read the text, and then discarded — we don't store the photo. We keep what was read from it, the matches we found, which one you picked and how long it took, to count your scans and to improve recognition.
- –Your email choice: whether you agreed to receive news and offers, and when.
- –The demo: no account is needed. A cookie identifies your browser so you only see your own demo books and so we can count your demo scans.
Why we use it
- –To provide the service you signed up for — your account, your catalog, scanning, and emails about your account such as confirming your address (contract).
- –To keep it working and fair — limiting scans, preventing abuse, fixing problems and improving how well books are recognized (legitimate interest).
- –To send news and offers — only if you ticked the box for it. You can turn it off at any time on the Your plan page in the app (consent).
We don't sell your data, and we don't use advertising or third-party tracking.
Who else handles it
We use a few services to run oldchapters. Each only gets what it needs for its job:
- –Hetzner — hosts the app and its database, in the EU.
- –Anthropic (USA) — its AI reads the text on your title-page photos. Data sent to it through its API is not used to train its models.
- –Resend (USA) — sends our emails, such as the link to confirm your address.
- –Google — only if you choose “Continue with Google”, to sign you in.
- –Book catalogs (Google Books, Open Library, Internet Archive, ISBNSearch) — we send them the title and author read from your scan to find matches. They receive book details only, never your name or email.
Where data goes to the USA, it's protected by appropriate safeguards such as the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.
Cookies
We only use cookies that the app needs to work — no advertising or analytics cookies:
- –A login cookie that keeps you signed in, for up to 30 days.
- –A demo cookie that keeps your demo books yours, for up to 30 days.
- –A short-lived cookie (10 minutes) that protects “Continue with Google” against forgery.
If you hide the tips on the Add book screen, that choice is saved in your browser, not sent to us.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and catalog for as long as your account exists. To delete your account and everything in it, write to us and we'll do it within 30 days. Demo books are kept for up to 30 days and then cleared.
Your rights
You can ask us to see the data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, limit or object to how we use it, or give it to you in a portable form — you can also export your catalog yourself as a CSV file from Library Management. You can withdraw consent to news and offers at any time. Write to info@oldchapters.com; we'll reply within a month.
If you think we've handled your data wrongly, you can also complain to a data protection authority — in Croatia, the Personal Data Protection Agency (AZOP, azop.hr).
Changes
If we change how we handle your data, we'll update this page and its date. For significant changes, we'll let account holders know by email.
